BRIAN
CLARKE
Sir Brian Clarke (1953–2025) was a British artist, known above all for his work in stained glass, mosaic and architectural art, but also for paintings, drawings and printmaking.
He studied at several art schools (including Oldham School of Arts and Crafts, Burnley School of Art, North Devon College of Art and Design), where he was trained in classical techniques as well as in design and colour composition. Over his long career Clarke developed an art that combined glass, colour, light and surface with abstract and symbolic elements — and furthermore translated his works onto paper and prints. His prints and works on paper are characterised by a strong engagement with colour, form, line and light.
The Himmelreich collection comprises six hand-signed original lithographs from the Vesper series in the format 90 x 130 cm. Works by Sir Brian Clarke are seen less in the major museums of the world and are instead installed in architecture, public buildings or form part of private collections. Some exhibition venues, museums or galleries where his works have been or are shown:
• Tate Gallery (United Kingdom): Tate lists Clarke as an artist.
• Museum of Arts and Design (New York): In 2020 a major exhibition titled “Brian Clarke: The Art of Light” took place here.
• Newport Street Gallery (London): Exhibition “A Great Light” (2023–2024) with works from over five decades.
• Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (Norwich): earlier exhibition with Clarke's glass works.
• Deutsches Glasmalerei-Museum (Linnich): The museum, which specialises in stained glass, also displays works by Brian Clarke
