RICHARD PAUL
LOHSE

Richard Paul Lohse (1902–1988) was an important Swiss painter, graphic artist and designer, counted among the leading representatives of non-figurative art. Born in Zurich, Lohse developed an early interest in art and design. He studied at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts and worked as a teacher, thereby influencing a new generation of artists.

Lohse is primarily known for his conceptual works that combine geometric forms and intense color fields. He was a co-founder of the group “Allianz”, which advocated modern art and a move away from representational painting. His style evolved into a unique form of color painting that is both clearly structured and dynamic.

Over the course of his career Lohse created numerous works marked by harmony and a deep understanding of composition. His works have been exhibited in many renowned museums, including the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Fondation Beyeler and the Kunsthalle Bern. These institutions acknowledge his influence on modern art and demonstrate his ability to bring color and form into novel contexts.

Richard Paul Lohse remained active into old age and left a remarkable legacy that is still visible in the contemporary art scene. His works are not only technical masterpieces but also invite reflection on perception and space.
