CHARLES
LAPICQUE

The Frenchman Charles Lapicque (1898–1988) addressed questions of optics and color after his engineering studies. At the age of 30 he decided to devote himself to art and became an important representative of the École de Paris. He received numerous awards such as the „Prix Raoul Dufy“, the „Prix Biennale Venedig“ (1953) and the „Grand Prix National de Peinture“ (1979).

Charles Lapicque's works span many different styles, including Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and figurative art. Lapicque was also a sought-after portraitist and produced portraits of many famous figures, including Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Georges Braque.

Lapicque’s works are known for their powerful colors, geometric forms and symbolic representations. The Himmelreich-Kollektion holds more than 50 hand-signed original lithographs and continues to expand this collection. The Kunsthalle Hochschwarzwald presents a selection from Charles Lapicque's collection and oeuvre. Works by the French painter can also be found in the following museums:
