HANNA
BREIDINGER-SPOHR
Hanna Breidinger-Spohr (1922 to 2000) was a German painter and woodcut artist. Her complete works comprise approximately 600 woodcuts and linocuts created between 1954 and 2000.
In 1941, at the age of 21, she applied to the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe and was admitted for the winter semester 1941/42. At the end of the summer semester 1944, study at the art academy was declared a luxury by the Nazi authorities, and the students were conscripted into the armaments industry. After the war, Hanna Breidinger-Spohr resumed her studies in Karlsruhe in 1952 and was assigned to the drawing class of Karl Hubbuch, who had been banned from his profession by the Nazi authorities from 1935–1945 and had been teaching again at the academy as a professor since 1947. It was through him that Hanna Breidinger-Spohr found her true vocation: the woodcut in the hand-printed technique.
The Himmelreich-Kollektion comprises more than 30 wood prints by Hanna Breidinger-Spohr, in particular hand-signed black-and-white Limericks and colored motifs that were printed in only small editions – usually fewer than 5.
